Herman F.A. Lange Scholarship Application

South Carolina Recreation and Park Assocation

Herman F.A. Lange Scholarship

Who was Herman F. A. Lange?

Herman F. A. Lange was the Recreation Director for the City of Greenville, SC.  He and the Recreation Director for the City of Columbia organized a gathering of recreation directors from around the state of SC in the Columbia director’s home to form a recreation society.  These men became the founding fathers of the SC Recreation and Parks Society, later named the SC Recreation and Park Association.

Scholarship Committee Overview

Each year a scholarship committee is formed by the SC Recreation and Park Association.    The President Elect of the Association assigns the Vice Chair of the committee.  The Vice President of each district is responsible for appointing a member to serve on the committee as their district representative.

The Vice Chair of the Scholarship Committee is responsible for heading all fundraising efforts.  Traditionally a silent auction or raffle is held in the exhibit hall at the yearly SC Recreation and Park Association conference.  Additionally, funds are generated through room rebates at the conference.  During joint conference years, the revenue generated from the silent auction/raffle is split 50/50; funds from the room rebates are split based upon percentages of delegates from each location.

This committee is responsible for awarding two scholarships to eligible students within SC.  Typically scholarships are awarded for the Spring and Fall semesters up to $1,500.  Students are required to reapply for each semester that they are interested in receiving the scholarship.
