Join your fellow parks and maintenance professionals from across the state at the 2017 SCRPA Parks Maintenance Institute! This 2 day professional development program is designed exclusively for all park maintenance staff in South Carolina.


Program Schedule


Registration – 12:30-1:00 pm


Opening Session                1:00-2:15 pm

John Taylor, Director, Rock Hill PRT

Discover how to integrate a strategic plan into the work force.  Learn how to change the work culture, cross-train, and encourage innovation and initiative.  Build a strong team and network of support resulting in faster, smoother outcomes without all of the drama.


Session Block 1                   2:30-3:45 pm

Tree Care and Tree Risk Management. – Nathan DuBosh, MUSC 
Learn to identify hazards in trees and mitigate the risk trees impose on surrounding targets. Structural pruning in young trees will also be discussed.


Successful Maintenance Program – Tom Wolf, Greenville County PRT
Presentation Will Include: Policies and Procedure Development, Processes, Training, Accountability, Emergency Response,   Preventative Maintenance, Staff Communication, Back-up/Contingency Plans, Predictive Maintenance, Prioritization of Work

Weed Identification   - Vicky Bertagnolli, Clemson Extension

This hands-on session includes vital identification and management strategies for some broadleaf and grassy weeds common to landscape, turf, and roadside sites.


Secure that Load – Corporal L.T. Catoe, SC State Transport Police

When transporting equipment, it is extremely important for it to be properly secured. Failure to do so is a hazard to yourself and other drivers. It could also result in loss of property, fines, and possibly even your job. This course will teach you the proper way to safely secure your equipment.


Session Block 6   11:15-12:30

Biting Stinging Insects   - Vicky Bertagnolli, Clemson Extension

"What is out there?" This session we will learn how to ID a few insects and what their role in the world and our parks are.  Do we need to keep them are irradiate them?


The Dirty Dozen - Playground Safety- Roger Davis Playground Safety Services

What are they and how can we identify them on our playgrounds?  We will take at look out how to identify and prevent issues now can ensure a safer and more secure area for our children and guests to play on, in and around!

Why We Do What We Do - Phil Gaines, Director of the State Park Service
This session will help us evaluate our profession. Come to listen and learn from a veteran of over 30 years in parks and recreation describe why we do what we do in providing public parks and recreation the visitors and citizens of our great state.
