Adaptive Sports and Inclusion – An Interactive Experience

 

Participants of this workshop will be introduced to adaptive sports and be given the unique opportunity to get hands-on experience in adaptive cycling, sled hockey, tennis and basketball.  The concept of inclusion as it applies to Parks and Recreation departments will be discussed as well as the attitudes of staff members employed in those organizations.   Participants will learn the steps and process of inclusion.  Lastly, a focused discussion on elements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) will take place applicable to Parks and Recreation departments.
.4 CEU’s will be offered ~ Lunch provided by Chick-Fil-A

9:45 – 10:00 SCRPA updates and business


Session I - Introduction to Adaptive Sports


10:00 – 12:00 Participants will be given and overview of adaptive sports and will receive hands-on experience in:
Cycling
Sled Hockey
Tennis
Basketball


12:00 – 12:30 Lunch sponsored by Chick-Fil-A


Session II - Having an inclusive approach in Parks & Recreation


12:30 – 12:45 General discussion of what inclusion does and doesn’t mean


12:45 – 1:00 Discussion about the steps and process of inclusion


1:00 – 1:30 Activity – complete an activity analysis on one of the activities from the morning session


1:30 – 1:45 Finish discussion of steps and process of inclusion


1:45 – 2:30 ADA primer
