This 1 day professional development program is designed exclusively for athletic staff in South Carolina. The institute will feature sessions on current issues and events in youth sports, facilitated interactive athletic roundtable’s and a dinner awards ceremony to recognize excellence in SC’s athletic departments.

Crowd Control What to do Prior to and after you Call 911

A look at policies and procedures for your agency to implement. We will discuss what actions are needed prior to events, during and then afterwards. Also, what do you do after you call law enforcement? What are your role and responsibilities? We will also look at some laws that are on the books that are set out to further protect game management, coaches and officials.

From Rec ball to the NFL
James ( Jimbo) H. Howey a native of Lancaster, SC has been officiating for 34 years. During this time he has officiated on the High School, College and Professional level. While making football his main sport. Howey also officiated basketball, baseball, and softball. He served as President of the SC High School Football Officials Association and the SC Basketball Officials Association. He was inducted into the SCFOA Hall of Fame in 1999. Howey worked football and basketball in the South Atlantic Conference and then became a football official in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Then in 1999 he was selected to the officiating staff of The National Football League. He has officiated playoff games ranging from wild card games to conference championships and the Pro Bowl. He has worked as a back judge and field judge and wears jersey number 37.

Avoiding the Parent Trap: A Discussion on Working with Youth Sport Parents

Working with youth sports parents is consistently noted as one of the biggest challenges that athletics staff and coaches face. This presentation will provide a forum for discussing the issues posed by overzealous parents, highlight the positive role that parents can play in the youth sports experience, and provide a set of strategies for maximizing the positive while minimizing the negative. The importance of developing and enacting a community-wide youth sports philosophy will also be discussed.

Partnerships for Addressing Key Issues in Recreation and Athletics

This discussion will focus on identifying the key issues and concerns facing athletics staff in South Carolina, and will discuss strategies for developing partnerships to address them. The program will highlight examples of successful university-community partnerships, including service and field-based learning, evaluation, staff and volunteer training, program development, research, needs assessment, and strategic planning, and provide opportunities to discuss new partnership ideas and initiatives.

In-Basket/In-Box Exercise: The Challenge Of Setting Priorities
